Overall Word of Mouth (Critics) - Mixed to Positive!

Rating Score -> 3.5/5
What does stick out like a sore thumb here is the film’s length and its lack of clarity. The story digresses heavily in the latter half and makes you wonder where it is headed. With a runtime of 2 hours 28 minutes, it does get a tad monotonous and tiring. Overall, the film has some lovely lingering moments. If you want to look beyond the usual, Gehraiyaan definitely has depth that’s worthy of being explored.

Gehraiyaan moves past the length of 'necklines and hemlines' of the outfits the actors have worn in the film and it's the depth of the narrative, story and the emotions that you connect with. Watch it for Deepika because she truly has outdone herself, once again.

Deepika Padukone, Ananya Panday film is too designed, choppy. The foursome of Deepika Padukone, Ananya Panday, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Dhairya Karwa should have been a throbbing hot mess, but the film doesn’t go deep enough.

Dharma Productions, a banner that redefined the tenets of the war drama with the classy yet gripping Shershaah, does the same with the romance genre with Gehraiyaan. The film, unlike a Kuch Kuch Hota Hai or a 96, is anything but a celebration of sugar-coated love. The romantic sequences are as realistic as can be, something that is accomplished by the intelligent use of 'silences'. It is, however, the final half an hour that proves to be Gehraiyaan's biggest surprise as what unfolds is completely different from anything one could have expected. The twist has 'shock value' and blends with the narrative quite well.

Deepika Padukone is the soul of the film. Padukone grabs your attention from the first scene itself. Alisha gets anxious, and she suffers panic attacks, and Deepika proved her acting mettle in these moments. Siddhant Chaturvedi is also a surprise package. His role as a selfish fiance is been layered with various elements. Ananya as Tia is a sweetheart, and you'll feel bad for her. Panday has put sincere efforts in keeping the film together, and Tia will be considered as her career-best performance.

Director Shakun Batra is clearly inspired - Hollywood and South Korean style of filming and presentation can be felt but it comes as a breather. However, the pace sometimes distracts and its ungratifying climax makes it a curious case of writing. Watch Gehraiyaan to explore human relations from a third-person perspective - a window into 'their' lives unravelling secrets, lies and lingering moments of love.

‘Gehraiyaan’ is a stirring portrait of regrets and redemption, all the while playing a cat-and-mouse game with its viewers. Just when you think it’s a familiar tale of illicit love, shame, and guilt between Alisha and Zain — both who are in committed relationships with their respective partners played by Panday and Dhairya Karwa — the film veers into another direction. Its shift of pace and meditative mood feels abrupt, but you still stay with them.

Gehraiyaan in many ways is an uncomfortable watch, throwing up questions about the role of destiny and choice in one's life. While some lucky ones like Khanna (Shah) are able to make peace with the past, for certain other characters it is not so easy to break the shackles of genes and therein lies the conundrum - are you defined by destiny or the choices you believe you are making? Gehraiyaan leaves one grappling with questions of one’s own, long after the waves have receded.

On the whole, Gehraiyaan is for the youngsters, the millennials. It is good that the film has been premiered on an OTT platform because it is, in every sense, a film for the digital platform. Of course, the orthodox audience will not appreciate the film.

Batra, who has co-written the script, has very little new to offer, and the film, which runs for 130 minutes – when it could have wound up in 90 – often seems repetitive. There is a lot of style, yes, but no substance. We see gorgeous women dressed sexily, and Alisha’s yoga demonstration appears to be all about titillation.

In Hannah and Her Sisters, a film that Shakun cites as a major influence, a character describes the heart as a ‘very, very resilient little muscle.’ Gehraiyaan is a testament to that. The film never reaches the poetic heights it aspires to. But it is an intriguing excursion into the unfathomable and ultimately unknowable depths that men and women contain within them.

Deepika takes to her role like a fish to water and stamps her presence on the film. Siddhant, in contrast, wears an expression that vacillates between hangdog and deadpan - one is barely distinguishable from the other - and is hardly the ideal foil to his infinitely more malleable co-star. The complexities of the scarred Zain - he is suave, sweet-talking and palpably flawed - are way out of Siddhant Chaturvedi's league.

Deepika Padukone found her groove a while ago. But when a performance feels like a person, it's artistry at an altogether different level. As Alisha, she's raw yet polished, fierce yet soft, volatile yet suppressed, a woman willing to flex herself in every sense of the word. She embodies to perfection the Gehraiyaan in the title.

Both Deepika and Siddhant have been able to portray the emotions of being with somebody who is both the ailment and the cure. In a tailor-made role, Deepika is effortless in portraying both the sassy and vulnerable aspects of Alisha. More than just its gleam, Gehraiyaan needs to be relished for its deeper meanings and heartfelt performances.

Gehraiyaan taps into the same Indian demographic, going through its longest phase of emergent adulthood, which could even be a permanent state — where couples live together, rather than get marry early. They imagine a future together, yes; but aren’t necessarily bound by it.

Romance in your 30s is no puppy-love business: youthful idealism ebbs with each passing year, while regrets gradually encroach. Setting sail in the muddy waters of modern relationships, Shakun Batra’s star-studded Hindi drama shows that infidelity is never a simple affair.

An Amazon original, Gehraiyaan, is a 150-minute film which seems to have been scripted to suit the stars. However, all the four leads come up with tepid performances, lacking any sort of charisma.

Rating Score -> 2.5/5
While the story looks like an honest exploration of the highs and lows of complexities in human relationships, it painfully misses the point of including the circumstances and the privileges that come along with it. Acknowledging the privilege to be able to delve into flurry of emotions that are a result of complex human relationships, especially in a country like India, where majority don’t have that luxury, is completely missing from the film, which otherwise, tries to paint an empathetic picture of infidelity.

  2. A bad taste joke, without the elementary logic of connecting with the audience, emanating from people like Shakun, Karan,Dar Gai,Apoorva unmarried, sick, who was joined by Deepika out of stupidity for money with her image and three weak young people in terms of acting. 1 hour and 48 minutes of advertising for bikinis and rudimentary scenes without attraction. Disappointing, disgusting, execrable.
