While Bollywood has seen several films where the stories revolve around the gay and lesbian community, this film attempts to provide a perspective to families, especially in smaller towns. Instead of walking away from them, the film brings families right into the centre of the fold.

Rajkummar Rao, Bhumo Pednekar film hides its core under layers of humour. We love rainbows. If only it didn’t get mainstream Bollywood so long to come to the point, and stick with it.

The attempt looks almost like that of a brilliant chef’s who wanted to include a lot of elements into her dish but ended up making a khichdi that lost both its simplicity and individuality. Moreover, at 152 minutes and 17 seconds, it’s too long a film to test your patience. A missed opportunity despite Rajkummar’s ‘biscuits’, Bhumi’s sincerity and an issue that’s so not explored in Indian cinema yet!

Bollywood's fixation with humour to narrate stories on taboo subjects seems to be working pretty well so far. And when it comes to touching upon a sensitive topic such as homosexuality, films like Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan and Dostana have relied on this concept and succeeded in sending out positive messages. So, it comes as no surprise to see Badhaai Do also resort to a lighter tone while highlighting an important issue.

Badhaai Do doesn’t manage this reconciliation. But it isn’t entirely toothless. The film passionately advocates for inclusivity and acceptance. Which is always a welcome message.

Not that Badhaai Do is bad. It has its heart in the right place, and gives us a real feel-good ending, which is what most movie-going junta hopes for. But did it bring about any change? Even stir something in your heart? We doubt it.

The film has tried to throw some light on a subject many in our society refrain from even talking about. What makes Badhaai Do stand tall is that romance is in the crux of the film, and it is beautiful, too, it is just that it is not your typical romantic couple and definitely not a typical Bollywood rom-com. Badhaai Do might not be the torchbearer for LGBTQ+ community, but is surely a feather in the cap for many, who give the Pride its true colours.

If only Badhaai Do wasn't busy pandering to the overdone small-town parivar's humour and hullaballoo and elaborating on its there's more to being queer than being queer. For now, it's one baby step at a time.

Shardul is perfectly portrayed by Rajkummar Rao. Particularly heartbreakingly beautiful are the emotionally heated times. Sumi is played by bhumi pednekar in a compassionate, nuanced, and spot-on performance. To add momentum to the proceedings, the first half should have been edited better. The storey misses its way a few times in its attempt to create layers, but it eventually hits home. The clip is beautifully shot, portraying the natural beauty and simplicity of Uttarakhand. Overall, A Perfect Family Entertainer with a Solid message!

At heart Badhaai Do is a lively comedy - in many ways and occasionally, it recalls the subtle, good-humoured methods that a Hrishikesh Mukherjee film employed so effectively in another era. But its firmly new-age spirit helps it emphatically embrace diversity and difference as it explores notions of masculinity, feminine desire, marriage, procreation and the manacles that society seeks to put on those who are born different.

Badhaai Do is a well-made bold and class-appealing film meant only for a few multiplexes and high-end single-screen cinemas in the big cities but it definitely does not have universal appeal because India is not yet prepared for such subjects in the mainstream film domain. Its casting (by Shiv Chauhan and Ashish Khare), sensitive handling, realistic characters and wonderful performances are its biggest plus points. However, its ultra-bold subject will greatly restrict its appeal.

Badhaai Do is an honest effort in the right direction, and one of the reasons it works is because it makes you wonder why the law doesn’t allow members of LGBTQiA+ community to marry and have children. I hope that’s the dialogue the film triggers.
