When it comes to narrating a real-life story on the screen, there are many points a filmmaker and its cast can go wrong in, but Chhapaak stays true to its title and depicts what a “splash of acid” can do to a person's life. Chhapaak is as much about the 19-year-old Malti who braves an acid attack and blossoms into a courageous and wonderful woman as it is about the other women in the country who have been subjected to the heinous crime. The film uses Malti's story to drive the narrative forward, but the bigger aim is to highlight the fact that despite the rise in the number of acid attacks in the recent past, acid is still freely sold in India.

Chhapaak serves as a necessary, if not great watch. You leave the theatre feeling that you've been dished out a decent film on a pertinent subject that had the potential to be better. I'm going with 3 out of 5 stars.

Rating Score -> 3/5
The film has many instances that are gut-wrenching and you will also feel the pain and almost scream at the top of your voice. Meghna Gulzar being the amazingly talented filmmaker she is showed those scenes with subtlety and she knew where to keep the background score and where it can be avoided.

Rating Score -> 3/5
The very "uplifting" portion of the film occurs in the scene right before the interval when Malti is shown uncovering her face reflecting on her newly found confidence and self-worth. However, the emotion depicted in that one scene does not quite lead to the final statement.

Rating Score -> 2.5/5
The chemistry between Deepika Padukone and Vikrant Massey looks a tad pale however it is Vikrant an outstanding performer takes the center stage with ease. Vikrant who runs an NGO in the film absolutely justifies his part in the film. Filmmaker Meghna Gulzar who likes to tell complex stories in the simplest way makes ‘Chhapaak’ a decent watch.

Chhapaak also gives us the most shocking finale at the movies in years. Gulzar and her team turn the adage expect the unexpected on our heads. You have a smile on your face, and then suddenly...

‘Chhaapak’ is a sensitive film with a delicate, yet powerful, handling of a heinous crime against women, and an important story that needs to be heard.

You look at Padukone, so far away from the dressed-up, made-up parts she’s done till now, and acknowledge an actor who wants to break out of her safe zone, to actually inhabit someone else’s skin even if it’s burnt. Yes, it’s worthy, but it’s also very watchable.

Rating Score -> 2.5/5
Chhapaak is a story that deserves to be told and highlights a cause that needs to be heard. Deepika Padukone is in fine form, and the supporting cast also sparkles. If the storytelling and pacing had been stronger, then Chhapaak could have made a bigger splash.

Enduring abominable assaults, often inflicted by scorned lovers, bitter relatives or even unprovoked strangers, can sharply alter one’s very being. The wounds may be skin-deep but the hurt permeates into their very consciousness and rips their self-worth to shreds. And this is a story of a woman who has been through it all and yet, discards the distinction extended to her.

In the end, 'Chhapaak' is an empowering movie about more than an acid attack survivor; it is a movie that celebrates the human spirit, the undaunting courage showcased by hundreds of women who have been victimised but refuse to let their scars define them.

It’s this sparseness, minimalism and austerity in the telling and an essential quietude that lend Chhapaak an emotional force of its own though some may end up finding it measured to a fault. The only excess the film indulges in, is FabIndia. The wardrobe of almost every character/actor appears to have been sourced from the store. And that makes for quite a visual splash.

Chhapaak is a story that makes you sob and smile at the same time. It’s a sensitive, brave and gut-wrenching story that’s not easy to watch, but definitely worth telling.

The ageing and passing of time isn't specifically striking but Deepika's physical transformation by make-up artist Clover Wootton is simply exceptional. 'Usne mera chehra badla hai, mann nahi,' believes Malti. Truly the only 'manns' that need to change are the ones that empowers such atrocity.

Loosely translated, Chhapaak means ‘splash’ and the film with its powerful message is likely to make a splash too. Take a bow, ladies.

But these are just minor worries in a beautiful, beautifully made film. Also, kudos to a 34-year-old Deepika for pulling off a 17-year-old's role. Why should our Khans have all the fun? Chhapaak is an important film. But be warned: it might make you cry. More than what a dying Aman Mathur made you when he sang Jo Hai Samaa, Kal Ho Naa Ho.

Chhapaak is a well-made film, has a good message and has noble intentions but it doesn’t make the desired connect with the audience. Also, it is a class-appealing film. It will, therefore, do well mainly in the high-end multiplexes of the big cities.

Despite the strong performances, the film doesn’t feel urgent or alive enough. Who was Malti before the attack? What were her dreams? There is enough to admire in Chhapaak. But I wish the film had taken the leaps that its protagonist did.
