'Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior' scores on various counts — superior performances, powerful action, visual impact, and most of all, it unfolds a story from the pages of history that deserved to be told, with just this kind of intensity, passion and vigour.

Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior does full justice to the emotion that Tanaji Malusare that he invoked is us when we read about him. Ajay Devgn brings forth the loyalty, zeal, courage and passion in his performance. Saif Ali Khan plays to the gallery as the ruthless and somewhat sadistic Uday Bhan Rathore.

Rating Score -> 3/5
Ever since Hindi Cinema has started making period dramas, the filmmakers have always ensured they are driven by grit, grandeur, gorgeousness and some galvanising performances. Om Raut's Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior also ticks all the boxes. And watching it in 3D enhances the thrill of watching the action set-pieces and the locales at the display.

Rating Score -> 3.5/5
Tanhaji is supposed to be hiding in an alley, and the way he brings his opponents down is breath-taking, but a little too unrealistic.

With filmmakers scrambling to convert historical accounts into big-screen spectacles, this one makes for a deserving tribute to a warrior who slipped through the cracks of history and arguably, was eclipsed by the Maharaj he represented. But even for those who don’t care for a history lesson, this makes for an action-packed battle film that introduces one to ancient war techniques and formations employed to circumvent every obstacle.

Tanaji was a valiant Maratha warrior, but he was a human. By showing a human being with extraordinary capabilities by exaggerating his qualities, to the point of making him unbelievably superhuman, the makers lose an opportunity. They end up turning this historical hero into a fictional creation and not a flesh-and-blood person who can inspire the upcoming generations.

Tanhaji might look one-dimensional at points as Raut’s version of the crucial Battle of Sinhagad is one hell of an ode to Tanaji’s bravery and refuses to go beyond certain thresholds. It’s also not so subtle in its symbol game as good and evil can be identified with their clothes’ colours. However, even if it’s over the top in creating larger than life heroes and villains, it’s very engaging. The delightfully planned battle scenes, coupled with inspired camera movements, are good enough to sustain your interest.

There will always be the questions raised about authenticity of facts, of course. Not much is known about Tanaji Malusare in any case, which is why any debatable aspect of his story might just be fended off with the statutory disclaimer right at the start. Watch Tanhaji as a well-crafted piece of Bollywood extravaganza, more than an authentic lesson in history.

All in all, Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior is an out-and-out entertainer and one of the best historical epics to come out of Bollywood ever. Watch it for Ajay Devgn's stellar act, for Saif Ali Khan's scene-stealing turn, for Sharad Kelkar's flawless performance, for its outstanding action sequences and choreography, the emotional depth and Om Raut's deft direction.

On the whole, Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior is an ordinary fare. A costly film (made at a budget of more than Rs. 100 crore), it will not be able to do admirable business at the box-office. It will do excellent in Maharashtra due to the Maharashtrian story, characters and flavour but despite that, it will not be able to recover its heavy investment.

Tanhaji succeeds in pushing your buttons but there is no getting away from its problematic ideology. In one scene, when a Mughal general is killed, Om immediately moves the camera to temple bells ringing loudly as though the gods themselves were applauding. This film is apparently the first in a series that celebrates the unsung heroes of India. I hope the ones that follow offer more inclusivity.

Rating Score -> 3.5/5
Watch Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior for the brilliant battle scenes and of course Saif Ali Khan (anti-hero) and Ajay Devgn's (unsung hero) performances.
