1. Times of India -

Rating Score -> 3.5/5
Samrat Prithviraj is a well-performed and well-directed family drama. It doesn’t have the opulence that we have seen in other historial dramas, but there is enough to keep you invested and also take you back into the pages of our glorious history.

After watching the colossal snoozefest that is Dr Chandraprakash Dwivedi's Samrat Prithviraj, Akshay Kumar and Yash Raj Film's first-ever attempt at a historical drama, we ask — what cinematic experience?

4. Indian Express -

Rating Score -> 2/5
Akshay Kumar’s period piece is loud, lurid and colourful. As befits its simplistic, shorn-of-nuance tone, this Akshay Kumar-Manushi Chhillar film lurches between dialogue-baazi and blandness, and stays completely faithful to its stated intent.

Rating Score -> 2/5
A historical drama of this magnitude needed more than just a big budget. It required a sharper eye, a larger vision and a greater degree of integrity, none of which is within its grasp.

6. Rediff -

Rating Score -> 3/5
Akshay Kumar plays the part with enthusiasm, like he was just waiting to get into the costume of a historical hero. Sonu Sood and Ashutosh Rana are impressive in their roles. Newcomer Manushi Chhillar is blandly pretty and a bit too raw to have carried off a fiery princess.

Akshay Kumar disappoints in the lead role. In order to tone down his body language and Punjabi accent, Kumar has lost much of his trademark energy and could not develop the gravitas required to play the celebrated ruler. He growls like a lion who has lost his bite and despite all the air-brushing, doesn’t look like the boy who became a Samrat in his 20s.

No one seems human in Akshay Kumar's part-panegyric, part-misguided feminist epic. Akshay Kumar plays a brave, righteous, benevolent and feminist king in one of his most lacklustre and inorganic roles ever.

But there’s something about this eternal entertainer, in a terribly fake moustache. As the serious warrior-king with the seat of his Rajput power in Ajmer, when I first hear him go, “Kaka”, directed at his blindfolded uncle (Sanjay Dutt), I almost think he’s gonna break into the hook steps, ‘Bala, Bala, Bala… Shaitan ka saala’ (from Housefull 4!).

The film is enjoyable; however, it is advised that anyone interested in history do some research before watching it.

Samrat Prithviraj might test your patience and endurance levels. The only compelling narrative in this dull drama is that of Manav Vij's character of Ghori who itches to invade and pillage.

Rating Score -> 3/5
Even though the film is based on Prithviraj and Sanyogita’s love story, their romance is not as much in focus here as is the bravery of Prithviraj Chauhan. It is also an attempt to remind viewers that Prithviraj was the last Indian king on the throne of Delhi before invaders took over the rule, only ending when the British left the country in 1947. Though it is surprising that Prithviraj’s story took so long to be told on the big screen, it definitely is a chapter that we needed to revisit, and Chandraprakash Dwivedi’s film is an earnest attempt at that.

On the whole, Samrat Prithviraj is an average entertainer which will do fair business in U.P., Bihar and C.P.C.I. Rajasthan. For its big canvas, huge cost and impressive star cast, its business will not be as big, huge or impressive.
