1. Bollywood Hungama -

Rating Score -> 2.5/5
On the whole, TOOFAAN boasts of powerful performances along with some heart-touching and dramatic moments. But the film’s lengthy runtime, poor soundtrack, clichéd plot and the predictable narrative diminishes the impact to a great extent.

Forbidden love, casual bigotry, communal harmony, making of a boxer and redemption of a disgraced athlete… Toofaan tries to tread several paths at once. In doing so, the fictional tale loosely feels like a mishmash of several films you may have seen before… Ghulam, Sultan, Mukkabaaz.

3. NDTV -

Rating Score -> 2/5
A formulaic plot punctuated with misplaced musical set pieces (that merely add to the length of the film) and storytelling conventions that reek of obsolescence undermines the impact of this chronicle of a foundling raised by a gang lord.

Farhan is the force behind this Toofaan. It won't be an exaggeration to say that Toofaan is a one-man show. From nailing boxing sequences to being vulnerable during emotional scenes, Farhan stands firm through the entire film. Farhan pushes the boundaries and worked hard to get the body of an athlete and it seems to have paid off. He looks effortless on the screen as a boxer. But Farhan's efforts deserved better.

Toofan is often inane and predictable with Ali going on to win boxing match after boxing match, and eventually catching the eye and the heart of Ananya. It does not need a Sherlock Holmes to anticipate where the plot will wind up, although a second totally unexpected tragedy, seems needless and purports to have been written merely to harden Prabhu’s adamancy.

Toofaan was supposed to be a moving underdog story. However, it's an uninspired and uninspiring concoction of dramatic lines that carry little emotional weight, plot lines seen a thousand times before, and characters that do not strike a chord. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra captured what it feels like to be young in an unfair world with films such as Rang De Basanti, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and Delhi-6. Hope he finds that distinct style and voice again.

Farhan Akhtar as ‘Toofaan-the-new-Muhammad-Ali’ is completely convincing, both as a novice who is a fast learner, and the dejected warhorse. Farhan Akhtar movie pops with smart jabs, ends with a satisfying punch.

#Toofaan: PREDICTABLE.
Rating: Medium starMedium star½
Lacks the punch of #BhaagMilkhaBhaag... Clichéd plot, predictable screenplay, excessive runtime [2.41 hours] roadblocks... Few emotional moments, topnotch performances [#FarhanAkhtar, #PareshRawal] standout. #ToofaanReview

Had Toofaan been taut and tried to circumvent staid sports drama tropes further, it would have been worth rooting for. The only thing that sets this film apart is the social commentary (‘love jihaad’ finds a mention), reflecting how tough it can get for a couple to retain their respective names and identities and still dream of a life together.

Toofaan's sentiment would resonate a lot better if the film wasn't so banal in its optimism or objections. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's underdog sports drama-meet-love in the time of bigotry, a theme masterfully explored in Anurag Kashyap's Mukkabaaz, follows a formulaic approach in blending its athleticism and social conflicts.

When you first hear that a project brings together Farhan Akhtar and Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra which is billed as a sports film your mind instantly recalls the magic they created with Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. Toofaan for sure doesn't match up to the brilliance the duo presented with the biopic.  However, it's a feel good theatrical that you would have enjoyed watching in closed dark spaces of cinema halls munching on popcorns. You can still enjoy the film if you admire Bollywood, not sure if it can satiate your love for boxing though. You might go in for your love for Bollywood movies but you'll leave with an impressing note for Farhan and Mrunal.

Traversing the predictable terrain of almost every film in the genre, Toofaan says nothing new. Even if we look away from the global genre classics and turn to recent Bollywood, Toofaan feels like a regurgitation of everything that has been done before, starting from Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, touching upon Chak De! India and even rehashing parts of Sultan.

This had the tools, material, and makings of a great film.  Alas, it stops at just about being good enough. Stops when? At 20 minutes shy of three hours! Which might make Toofaan seem like such a long movie. But given how much it packs into its compressed timeline, with breathless energy, without a moment of pause, let alone to ponder —you wish sometimes that all of it was stretched into a series instead.

14. Khaleej Times -

Rating Score -> 3/5
A sports drama about a boy from the wrong tracks of life fighting his way out of the slums to make his mark as a national level boxer with a Hindu-Muslim love story (however, tepid) added for effect, sounds like a textbook recipe for an intense human drama. But the only thing you are likely to be impressed by here is Farhan’s ripped muscles, especially in the latter half of the movie.

Director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's latest magnum opus Toofaan is an unappealing mess that ends up being a full-fledged nightmare for Farhan Akhtar fans. It revolves around a street rowdy's rise in the boxing world while touching upon the challenges faced by him in his personal and professional life. On paper, the sports drama has all the commercial elements--right from romance to the mentor angle-- that one would expect from a Bollywood masala entertainer. The plot, however, never really even touches its potential as nothing, just nothing works.
