Durgamati's idiocy knows no bounds. And blabbering 'kakorrhaphiophobia' or tossing in a tongue-on-fire tantrik only makes it worse. Even the usually spunky Bhumi appears awfully jaded as the IAS officer and minister's personal secretary grilled by CBI (Mahie Gill) over her boss's (Arshad Warsi shows his cards early on) suspected fraud until paranormal activity grabs hold of her in isolation.

His sensibilities are loud, tacky, and, in the film’s final moments, downright immoral. Durgamati is a bizarre misfire of Laxmii proportions. But since everyone involved in that film was so proud of it (and dismissive of all the negative reviews), there’s a good chance that they pat themselves on the back for this one too.

Durgamati - The Myth actually has a sequence that, had the film been released theatrically, would have heralded the intermission. The heroine, possessed by the spirit of a wrathful queen, shrieks that nobody will be allowed to enter or leave the mansion without her say-so. Fortunately, we aren't 'trapped' in a movie hall. We have the option of bailing out.

Of course, life can be stranger than fiction, and there are things in this world that no one can explain. That’s what ‘horror-thrillers’ are meant for, and if you want to go down that path, you have to ensure that the viewers will fall for it, hook, line and several sinkers. But there are zero thrills or chills in Durgamati, the Hindi remake of the Tamil-Telugu bilingual Bhaagmathie, by the same director. The whole thing, which stretches for an inordinate 2.5 hours, is almost entirely unintentionally hilarious.

The erratic storytelling affects the characters and, in turn, the performances, too. Bhumi Pednekar brings alive the haunting of Chanchal with the expected quota of bawling and rolling of the eyes, as a high-speed fan stays firmly pointed at her undone hair. She is let down by a ludicrous screenplay, as are the other proven artistes in the cast as Arshad Warsi, Jisshu Sengupta and Mahie Gill.

In a world where politics is often synonymous to hooliganism to some and egalitarianism is an alien concept (again, to some), ‘Durgamati’ does have a lesson or two to impart but the narrative and its storytelling technique is so bland that it slips through the cracks. A dialogue around strong ideologies including women empowerment is always welcome, but it could be delivered better.

Bhumi delivers with full sincerity, banging her head on walls, glaring and screaming, punishing herself with aplomb. But this is a logic-free story, which runs for a hundred and fifty-five minutes and no one could make it palatable. Director Ashok, who also directed the Telugu version, creates an almost frame-by-frame replica of the earlier film. Once again, the camera lunges, sways and heaves in all directions. Every tilted angle, ominous soundtrack and horror film cliche is utilized to create a creepy atmosphere. Doors creak open and shut, rain and thunder arrive when necessary, the wind blows exactly at the right time. But Durgamati isn’t just a horror film.

On the whole, Durgamati – The Myth is too tame, far-fetched and implausible a drama to make any impact. It will not find much appreciation. Had it been released in the cinemas, it would not have fared too well.
