Click this link for detailsDavid Dhawan has proved beyond doubt that it is impossible to templatise David Dhawan. With the sharp writing and editing missing, Coolie No 1 is but a poor facsimile of the original. As the jokes land with a thud, we are left just with the songs and even there, the OGs clearly win. For those who ask you not to compare the 1995 hit with the 2020 product, my one-line answer is that the makers should not have given us a copy in the first place. This is not a reboot, it feels like a spoof and it is best not to tamper with nostalgia.

Dhawan now has access to sunnier locations and more expensive hotels; the aim is clearly to give those of us in the cheap seats a sniff of the high life. But with the material as thin as ever, this version seems even emptier: it goes in one ear, and vaporises before it can emerge from the other.

There is something seriously wrong with a film that wants to be a laugh riot but does not have the wherewithal to cash in on Javed Jaffery's presence in the cast. He, like the rest, goes through the motions, summing up a comedy that would have been laughed out of the theatres had it made it to the big screen.

A dialogue from Govinda’s Dulhe Raja sums up Coolie No 1 remake: “Nanga nahayega kya, nichodega kya.” With 134-minute runtime, it seems like a never ending saga of painful comedy and mistimed tragedy. Please carry your own luggage.

Body-shaming, lisping and stammering aren't elements that induce chuckles and that's something the makers should have taken into consideration. There's also a mention of coronavirus in one of the jokes. A lot about Coolie No. 1 feels jaded. Even for those who might want to rely on madcap cinema for a few no-brainer chuckles amid the pandemic, the film's idea seems to be stuck in the '90s with nothing new to offer.

Click this link for detailsThis film is a remake of a remake so it’s not surprising that we also get remixed versions of the two chartbusters from Coolie No 1 – Main toh raste se jaa raha tha and Husn hai suhana. In the first song, there’s a shot of Varun and Sara dancing on an upper deck of a pink double decker bus with nuns swaying to the music behind them. What does this mean? I have no idea. And neither does this film.

The modern versions of Mirchi Lagi and Husn Hai Suhana are strictly okay and lack the organic quirkiness that made the original songs popular. The background music feels a bit generic at points. The other technical aspects are up to the mark.

Click this link for detailsThe time for constructed-on-paper-plots has long gone. It’s painful to see passable actors go through jerky scenes and terrible laugh tracks. Varun and Sara dancing to the still popular songs (“Tujhko mirchi lagi toh main kya karoon”) take you straight back to the OG. The only one who makes a meal of his character, played by the inimitable Kader Khan in the original, is Paresh Rawal.
