Click this link for detailsMercifully, Shershaah does not resort to chest-thumping and flag-waving. It celebrates an intrepid soldier. The hero isn't, however, given to either superficial swagger or bellicose bravado. He is the sort of clear-headed guy who knows what he has got to do and chips away at it with unwavering intent. That, to a certain extent, is how the film is. Just a little more cinematic firepower and flint might have taken Shershaah much higher - and further - as a war drama.

Many combat scenes don’t reflect the large canvas that the film is set up on, perhaps more deserving of a big screen experience. Yet, as an industry, Bollywood has seldom churned out epic war films that have been critically and commercially acclaimed. By those standards, ‘Shershaah’ ranks high than most of the recent war dramas and tells an inspiring story that needs to be told.

The minute it tries to explain, emphasise and remind us who said what and when, it dilutes a perfectly poignant moment. And Vishnu Vardhan goes significantly overboard in magnifying the martyr moment, blazing guns and all.

The Vishnuvardhan directorial attempts at doing just that, and despite having beautifully choreographed war sequences, a evolved Sidharth Malhotra, wobbles and falls just short of the cinematic spectacle it could have been.

Click this link for detailsTamil filmmaker Vishnuvardhan's maiden Hindi movie Shershaah is a reasonably engaging war drama that proves to be a good showreel for its leading man Sidharth Malhotra. The film is based on the life of Kargil hero Captain Vikram Batra and has been produced by Karan Johar, who had previously backed Gunjan Saxena. Like the Janhvi Kapoor-starrer, it opens with a heroic sequence that builds an aura around the protagonist. The rest of the narrative focuses on the titular character's childhood, love story and bravery.

Captain Vikram Batra was yes, a brave officer, but he was also a vulnerable and flamboyant son, a dramatic lover boy and a warm hearted human being. Shershaah dabbles with these aspects of Captain Batra, sometimes becoming overbearing as well but nonetheless giving us an insight into what Captain Batra was like.

Probably this is what works in the film’s favour. At 135-minutes, it feels a tad bit long but never out of sync. The thrill is always there. And you’ll get to know why it’s called Shershaah only after watching the film.

Click this link for detailsCall it producer Karan Johar’s sustained love for Fawad Khan or simply his good sense, but none of his ‘India-Pakistan’ movies — Raazi, Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, and this — can be faulted for playing to the gallery. Shershaah, regardless of how successful it is at condensing Captain Batra’s incredible life into two hours (not very, unfortunately), is a character study first. It’s a shame, then, that it can’t help but subdue the war hero’s natural fieriness with a distinct dollop of vanilla.

He is a chocolate boy, absolutely unsuited to play the part of a tough Indian Army Officer, Batra, whose first posting was in Jammu and Kashmir, where he helps kill a hardcore militant, Haider. His subsequent posting takes him to the heights of Kargil in 1999 when Pakistanis (many were not regular soldiers) had infiltrated Indian territory and set up several bunkers that Captain Batra (by then promoted from Lieutenant) and his men re-capture to hoist the tri-colour flag.

Click this link for details‘Shershaah’ starts off with a glimpse into Captain Batra’s life, but soon steers itself into the established war zone where it’s action and precious little else. The martyred Captain’s war cry ‘Yeh Dil Maange More’ when he reported the capture of point 5140. Almost immediately after, he volunteered to be a part of the next mission too, to recapture point 4875. A glance at such a gallant army officer’s life is nevertheless, inspiring, and the film is laudable by that yardstick.

While you know this is not the end. This review should end here though! What more should you expect from a film of this nature — that it moves you to tears after all!

Most of the credit for that goes to the lead man, Sidharth Malhotra. The actor puts on the uniform and becomes Vikram Batra. Will Shershaah be Sidharth's Uri though? Wish the film had had a theatre release! In her limited screentime, Kiara Advani leaves a mark on you. Dimple, however, remains as elusive as her real-life counterpart.

When Shershaah ends with footage of the real Vikram laughing and talking about battle, you inevitably get goose flesh.
