Overall Word of Mouth (Critics) - Negative!

Rating Score -> 3/5
Laxmii is loud, garish and over the top - just the kind of movie that is needed to shake Bollywood out of its stupor post the pandemic probably. If you enjoy mindless entertainers that pay lip service to a social cause and believe Khiladi Kumar can make no wrong move on the big screen only then go for Laxmii.

Rating Score -> 1.5/5
The usually reliable Kumar seems out of depth in this poorly-written, clunky film and seasoned actors like Ayesha Raza Mishra and Ashwini Kalsekar’s brand of humour is mind-numbingly mirthless. The chemistry between Advani and Kumar is barely there and the back story of the transgender ghost seems outdated and archaic. The usual tropes attached to a Hindi horror potboiler, such as an abandoned plot of land filled with corpses and screechy ghosts, have all been thrown into this confused conundrum of a film.

#Laxmii: DISAPPOINTING.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️
Lacks the impact of the original [#Kanchana]... #AkshayKumar in terrific form, but weak screenwriting + forced comedy are downers... Gathers momentum in concluding portions... Expected so much more! #LaxmiiReview

Rating Score -> 2/5
‘Laxmii’ sets out to be a satire against age-old beliefs and biases – we get it! – but the insipidness of the narrative and whatever follows thereon, butchers the lessons it originally desires to impart. Looking back, the reiterating catchphrase happens to be ‘Maine kuch nahin dekha… yahaan koi nahin hain’ and that’s the vibe we’re latching on to at the moment.

Claiming to break stereotypes by heavily stereotyping people across the board is a device bad Bollywood never seems to get enough of: all the transgender characters clap their hands, and dance around a fire; a good Muslim character wears a ‘topi’ and beard; and everyone else speaks their lines in the hope of making us laugh. No one succeeds, not even Akshay, who can be really good when he isn’t taking himself too seriously. The only one does take his role seriously is Kelkar (effective), as Laxmii-the-transgender, who is wronged.

Raghava Lawrence forayed into Bollywood with his forte of horror-comedy but Kanchana is a decade-old formula. Bollywood redefined horror-comedy with Stree released in 2018 which set a high benchmark for the genre. The film's only X-factor is Akshay Kumar and watching him in a different space. The female lead Kiara Advani has nothing much to do but her cherubic look and subtle face bring calming moments in the film.

Laxmii is the most excruciating 2 hours, 12 minutes I have ever spent on a movie released on OTT. It is dull, boring, stale, unbearable. Watch it at your own risk! There's nothing to talk about the performances. Akshay, as a transgender, is forgettable. Kiara Advani is just about okay.

To conclude, Laxmii is the perfect watch with your family this festive season. The film has its faults but its heart is in the right place. Watch it for the fabulous performances and the message it intends to send across.

The action-packed climax hits the right notes despite being a bit rushed. Coming to the performances, 'Khiladi' is the heart and soul of Laxmii and does full justice to one of the toughest roles of his career. His physical intensity is a highlight of the film.

Usually, even in a bad Akshay Kumar movie, you laugh on some puns but this one is totally devoid of any fun. Don’t let your conscience blame you for the rest of your life. Stay away from Laxmii’s antics. We have anyway a pandemic to deal with. Let there be one less problem.

Laxmii is infinitely worse when it seeks to hold forth on the question of gender identity and the importance of embracing those that are different. With Akshay Kumar unabashedly caricaturing his transgender avatar that is so crucial to the film, it becomes impossible to digest anything that Laxmii tries to articulate about society's insensitivity towards the third gender. Neither the substance of its plea nor the shrillness with which it is sought to be transmitted sounds authentic.

All in all, Laxmii is a large-scale film that definitely would have invited whistles and claps in single screen theatres, but watching it on your devices, it’s just about passable. More critical audiences, however, might find it slightly problematic.

Laxmii is what happens when an idea not worth the quantum of its original investment gets more money and a bigger canvas, and is expected to evolve by itself to match the new, grander scale. That doesn’t happen; certainly, vengeful spirits cannot make it happen. The presence of intelligent human life is what was needed, but Laxmii never had it to begin with.

14. Mumbai Mirror -

Rating Score -> 1.5/5
A remake of Kanchana, Laxmii hoped to recast the same spell that worked for the 2011 Tamil hit. But while this may trigger some stomach-churning, it’s only because this horror-comedy fails to tickle or terrify. A transgender’s aatma resurfacing in the body of a professional myth-buster to avenge her death and that of her close ones is hardly super or even natural. But what passes for comedy in this trite horcom is painful and pathetic in equal measure. Weeping sounds reverberating across dark corridors, synchronised flickering of lights, a baba trying to urge an aatma to get sucked into a bottle, this film doesn’t leave out a single trope.

On the whole, Laxmii is a disappointing fare. It will not garner positive word of mouth and will, therefore, not be able to make much of a mark. Had it been released in the cinemas, it would have turned out to be a losing fare.

    1. Maybe only few stars who haven't been affected by the current controversy. Maybe Ajay, Hrithik etc. next movies will not be affected and not receive negativity.

  5. Although Akshay movies are very good, this one was one of the worst movie. It gets so irritating and annoying after certain point of time. Very very predictable and everything is so generic, novelty factor is hugely missing. Flashback story is so ghisi-piti and that Hindu-Muslim preaching?? What, are we bachchas??
