Amitabh Bachchan First Innings Analysis from 1969 to 1994
Amitabh Bachchan's first innings in Bollywood started from Saat Hindustani (1969) till Insaniyat (1994). After that, he took a sabbatical and returned to the box office in 1997. Even though he still featured in many lead roles from 1997 onward but by then he also started doing pivotal character roles and even second lead.
Because of this issue, we thought why not to evaluate his box office report for the first innings (1969 to 1994) also. It will give us a rough idea of how he did at the box office in his first innings when he mostly played the lead. We hope you people like this section. Thanks!

I believe, if we can get adjusted box office, then Amitabh Bachchan will be at Numero Uno position at the box-office, comfortably.

DeleteTrue
DeleteI think movies like Toofan, Canga Jumna Sarswati and Insanyat were average hits and not flops. Also Satygraha was a below average fair. BOMBAY TO Goa was a semi hit too. Please confirm?
ReplyDeleteGreat article Addatoday. Respect to you.
ReplyDeleteAmitabh has had a great career.
As well as the hits and blockbusters, there were also many Flop and Disaster movies. I suppose many actors go through such phases.
Filmography of Rajesh Khanna would be interesting to compare with Amitabh.
Amitabh Bachchan has 70% success ratio during his peak that lasted two decades His Average films has more footfalls than many super hit films of superstars flops came only when he was not in the lead and during his initial period till Zanjeer made him star and Deewar and Sholay made him Superstar after Muqaddar ka Sikandar, Don and Trishul Amitabh became Megastar and greatest superstar along with Dharmendra both are way ahead of other superstars
DeleteWazir was not a flop at all.
ReplyDeleteWazir is below average
DeleteEven movies like Toofan , Insaniyat ,Ganga Jumna Sarswari and akeyla were below average to average.
DeleteClean flops were AJOOBA, INDRAJEET, JADOGER AND MAY AZAD HO .
What about Kohraam, I heared it was a good hit in B and C grade centers.

DeleteThe period from 1973 to 1988 was golden period for megastar. Overall less than 10 odd films of his were flops in real sense at box office from his debut till 1994 as even the films which initially flopped in his earlier innings till 1973 later on recovered their cost & even made profits in their reruns post 1973. The films namely Faraar, Alaap, Jadugar, Main Azaad Hoon, Ajooba & Indrajeet were real flops in his career till 1994.The movie Agnipath which could not break even when it was released in 1990 was 10th highest money grosser of the year but was called flop though it had grossed Rs. 80 lacs per territory on average which even a blockbuster film managed to with difficulty in those times. It was declared a flop because it being a Bachchan movie was sold at very huge cost which it could not manage to recover on its 1st release. Movie Toofan 0f 1989 was an above average business wise contrary to common perception of it being a flop. Yes in the period from 1988 to 1994 Bachchan films could not manage to do gr8 business with few exceptions as expected from a Bachchan movie; it was more because of lacklustre content & poor quality of the movies. The megastar still had the unparelled fan following & pull at the box office. The movie Insaniyat released in 1994 had witnessed the best opening moneywise till that period though the film could not ultimately manage to do good business thanks to its poor quality & lack of content. Bachalchan phenomenon continued to rule the film industry right up to the mid 1990s in spite of very few releases in the period. The popular movie magazine Filmfare had declared Sanjay Dutt as Numero Uno-1993 with Anil Kapoor, Sunny Deol etc. among the top ten based on the opinion of top distributors, exhibitors and film pundits of the time; But all these experts were unanimous that if there was any star who was still at the top of was Bachchan who had announced temporary sabbatical from the movies. According to these movie pundits, Bachchan was the only star who could sell a movie just on his name, the others were successful yes but their success was not to their sole credit. The other popular magazine of the period named Movie put Bachchan at no.1 spot right up to 1997 based on the polls it used to conduct. It was only in 1998 when Bachchan was pushed to 2nd spot thanks to debacle of his much awaited comeback movie Mrityudaata in 1997 which beacause of its poor content & quality could not meet the sky high expectations of the cinegoers. In 2000 he appeared in Mohabbatein with SRK which gave a new dimension & new lease of life to Bachchan Phenomena. For nearly up to 2010 Bachchan was still considered among top five or at least top 10 stars having very good pull at box office though because of age he no longer was the main leading man in the most - but his roles were equally or some times more stronger than his young co stars. Still he gave some big solo hits like Baghbaan, Bootnath, Budha Hoga Tera Baap & Bootnath returns along with some multistarrer hits like KSKG, Kaante, Waqt- the race against time, Khaaki etc. Lately too he has been giving gr8 perfirmances & box offices success story movies like Piku, Pink, 102 Not out, Badla etc. though the Khans & other like Akshay, Ajay etc. give much bigger hits & Bachchan because of his age is not able to manage the same pull when he is solo lead as these comparatively young stars. The fact that Bachchan still manages to give big solo hits in spite of age related handicaps (which restricts range of roles & characters) is unparelled & even at this time he may probably find place among the top 10 to 15 stars for their box office pull though in overall fame he is still the no.1 superstar in india & the parts of world where indian & hindi movies r popular. He is one & the only super star of the melinium and one of the greatest actors who has all along impressed with the gr8 acting skills which is also shown by the fact that he has bagged 04 national awards for his acting in movies.
ReplyDeleteVery well said. I completely agree
DeleteYe Data Ekdum Incorrect Hai.Isme Amitabh Ki Kai Filmo Ko Flop Bataya Gaya Hai.Blockbuster Superhit Aur Hit Movies Bhi Jaada Hai Jo Ki Kam Dikhai Gayee Hai.Its Horrible Information.
ReplyDeleteAmitabh Bachchan Ki To Isme Kitni Filme Blockbusters Hai Usse Hit Average Bataya Hai.Sirf Thodihi Filme Flop Thi.O Bhi Paisa Vasul Filme Thi.

Deleteno one can beat Amitabh... He is the Super star... One man Industry in Films
ReplyDeleteAmitabh conventional look Not Handsome luck smile
ReplyDeleteAmitabh Bachchan is primarily a brilliant and a very versatile actor and matched only wih Dilip Kumar. The rest fall way behind. The Khans, the Kapoors.... may pull the younger crowds who all appear to enjoy movies with adult themes, hence the box office returns, the fact remains acting is a stand alone art and only Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan performed to the high standards
