Overall Word of Mouth (Critics) - Mixed to Positive!

1. India TV -

Rating Score -> 3.5/5
The winner of the movie is the climax which balances the heavy talks on sexual health issues in the country with simple but powerful humor punches, highlighting the great chemistry between Rajkummar Rao and Boman Irani. All-in-all, Made in China is a fun comedy movie with a message that can make for a good one time watch.

Given the premise, Mikhil Musale had a potential rib-tickler here. But while he manages to keep one interested and attentive through a large part of the film, his inability to hold the story together, particularly towards the end, takes the wind out of this one. It’s as if only in the last 15 minutes that he realised that this film must also trigger a conversation on the importance of speaking up about all matters carnal. The solution: retrofit a monologue into the narrative, even if it seems like an illogical transition.

Overall, Made in China is a decent watch with Rajkummar Rao, Boman Irani and Paresh Rawal delivering solid performances. Mikhil Musale makes a confident debut with this film about entrepreneurship.

At the heart of it, Made in China carries the message of normalizing conversations around sex and exposing the taboo and hypocrisy surrounding it, which is a commendable effort but it also does get preachy. Overall, this one is Rajkummar Rao’s film all the way and worth a watch to savor his acting prowess.

If you really must watch Made in China perhaps on account of being a fan of Rajkummar or Mouni, then be prepared to wade through a largely choppy first half, after which the rest of the film is satisfactory without being amazing. True to its title, the film appears to have been "made in China", with sporadic rewards that never culminate in a wholly rewarding film. I'm going with 2.5 stars.

Rating Score -> 2.5/5
The thing is the film can be understood from this one dialogue from the film. It tries to walk the tightrope but trips and is left hanging from it, just hangs.

7. ABP Live -

Rating Score -> 2.5/5
"Made In China" benefits from enjoyable performances of its two key players, Rajkummar Rao and Boman Irani. While Rajkummar is at home playing the guy next door with big dreams, Boman's Dr Vardhi is yet another understated comic addition to the actor's versatile repertoire. Inadvertently, "Made In China" lives up to its title, delivering a product that is faulty in parts and works in fits and starts. A portion of Magic Soup would perhaps have pepped up things.

The writers of Made In China have an interesting premise at hand. There is plenty of scope for jokes and at the same time to talk about the issue they want to highlight. They manage to tick almost all the boxes except that the film falters slightly in execution. While the film at its heart is the story of Raghu but the underlying message is how as a society we still cringe to talk about sex and sex-related issues.

But Made in China's own puerility comes forth in how it only finds wit in innuendoes -- repeated mention of Tiger Penis Soup, strategically fused bulbs of Hotel Peninsula or a 3 Idiots-like farcical confusion after Irani mistakes a parent-teacher event for a seminar to discuss sexual problems.

Made In China is also an example of how to impart sex education, sans metaphors and any awkwardness. An example that Shilpi Dasgupta, director of the Sonakshi Sinha-starrer Khandaani Shafakhana, must see.

Irani who has had long practice in being a curmudgeon, offers able support to Rao who keeps this thing afloat, in a few inspired parts. But the laughter is strictly occasional because it keeps coming up against confusion. What does Made In China want to be ? A double-meaning-dialogue-laden romp-in-the-sheets, or a go-to sex manual for repressed Indians? It veers, alas, towards the pulpit.

While its title may be Made in China, the movie definitely has its heart set in India with most of the action taking place in Gujarat. It might remind you of films like Khandaani Shafakhana, which handled similar themes and the message at the end about being more open about issues of sex in India, might be a reiterated one. But it's a movie worth a watch for those who enjoy quirky tales, with a dollop of laughter and social message. Plus of course Rajkummar Rao is an actor who doesn't disappoint on the big screen and as the Gujju businessman Raghu Mehta, he is spot on.

On the whole, Made In China has poor merits and, being a flop fare, it will not find appreciation at the box-office. The festive days (after the pre-Diwali weekend) may prove slightly beneficial for the film but alongside that, the negative publicity for the film will prove detrimental to the interests of the film.
