Overall Word of Mouth (Critics) - Positive!

Taapsee Pannu is sincere but her performance isn’t a revelation here. She has pulled off such fearful characters with conviction before. The director’s attempt to infuse panic works to a certain extent. His inability to get deeper into Sapna’s mind and analyse her worst fears, make this potentially promising game a damp squib. It is engaging and atmospheric but largely convoluted and unprovocative.

I didn’t walk into Game Over expecting a Red Dead Redemption II poster in the heroine’s bedroom. The 2018 game is a moral struggle set around the fading of the Wild West, and a genuine milestone in game storytelling, with astounding details and an encouragingly interactive open world. With influences like that, one would imagine director Ashwin Saravanan would create an innovative film.

Overall, Game Over is an intelligent film that uses the video game concept in a smart manner. Just like in video games... the game is not over until all the lives are lost. It's not really over until it's over. Taapsee Pannu's Game Over is a multi-layered and concept-oriented film that has its heart at the right place. With a screenplay that offers many thrills, Game Over is a must-watch this summer.

Indian Cinema doesn't do justice to the horror genre that well. So movies like last year's Tumbbad and now, Game Over, come as a refreshing change, that not just plays with the narrative and style of film-making but also delivers a thrilling experience in the end. Game Over wins you over with its effective storytelling techniques, fine character development, and enough thrills and chills. Go for it!

There are a couple of genuinely scary moments, but the rest of it is too stretched: even the 102 minute run time feels too long, with not enough thrills or chills.

The film manages a jolt or two but given the premise, one would’ve hoped to shrink into one’s seat. Slasher fans want their Jasons and Freddy Kruegers to be perverted deviants who are inventive in trapping and subsequently, doing away with their victims. Given the situational build-up here, one is able to mentally construct alternate escape routes that seem obvious to everyone except to those on the screen. And when you see Sapna or Kanamma hurriedly locking all the windows in the house, hoping to keep the invaders out, the following scene literally writes itself.

Game Over also has paranormal and psychological layers. But unfortunately, they are not explored to their fullest potential, due to which multiple questions remain unanswered. In the second half, there is a tug of war of sorts between reality and fiction, which creates more confusion than clarity. Intriguing for the most part, Game Over, therefore, fails to reach a satisfying climax. But that does not take away from the spine-chilling experience it is.

If you are into horror and thriller is what gives you adrenaline rush, then Game Over is just for you. The movie gives you a good mix of both and is perfect change form all the rom-coms and social drama. There are some scenes in the movie that will leave you confused, but don’t worry, at the end you will come out as impressed fan! If you live for on-screen thrills than this is perfect recipe for you! News Nation gives full 3 stars to this Taapsee-starrer.

One cannot help but marvel at how well the younger South-Indian film-makers have begun to combine Indian concepts with western ones. Game Over with its paranormal-meets-noir is a good example. Hindi cinema which has struggled to combine science and fantasy with mainstream stories is smart in taking a leaf from their book (Anurag Kashyap is the presenter of the Hindi version of Game Over).
