A bulk of the burden falls on Tiger Shroff’s strong shoulders and he manages to hit the marquee, when it comes to action. While film’s leading ladies Tara and Ananya are always glammed up and sport the best designer wear that money can buy, their roles aren’t tailored to perfection. Overall, this chapter doesn’t have much of that ishq wala love, but there is ample dosti, kabaddi and cool stuff to keep you going. Think of it as a much snazzier version of ‘Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikander’ minus the realism.

Apart from Will Smith's miss-if-you-blink appearance, watch SOTY (2) for Tiger.  Even when things around him are caving in, his ballerina grace is intact.  One star in the rating is reserved for Tiger. A word about the girls. Tara as the gold-digger is insipid and anal. Ananya is a shade better but rolls her eyes way too much. Both girls have envious teenage forms but lack screen-character.

The problem with the film is that it seems confused – should it be a candyfloss campus flick with hot chicks and hunky dudes or should it be a candyfloss campus flick with sports and tense moments? It ends up being neither. What remains is the candyfloss. Which, in retrospect, isn’t such a bad thing as you go for the movies to have a good time and be entertained. Student of the Year entertains but is too vanilla to have any lingering taste. In Hindi film parlance, I’d say, it’s a decent timepass film worth the popcorn. But frankly, it’s time for the students to graduate.

While a lot more comedy and humor were expected from the film, the best laugh scenes came from Tiger’s gang. YouTuber Harsh Beniwal leaves a lasting impression with his natural flair of humor he has. More of the scenes are out of the classroom and the drama contains outside that. More focus is laid on sports, dance, and romance. The chemistry between Tiger and the debutants are the highlight. The film narrative remains light and focus. Over the visual appeal of the movie is good. ‘A good one time watch’ this weekend.

Overall SOTY2 works because of th earmest performances from all four lead actors who are ably supported by some excellent actors in other side roles -specially Rohan's Pishori friends. It might come across as all fluff and not much soul but the pretty faces more than compensate. If you are a fan of KJo's feel good movies detached from reality, then SOTY2 is for you.

Irony is in predictably short supply. In this laminated depiction of college life, the boy is capable of all superheroics as the girls cheer him from the sidelines. Directed by Punit Malhotra - who once made the insufferable I Hate Luv Storys - this attempt at Archie Comics wants to be frothy but emerges merely aerated. The film exists exclusively to flaunt Tiger Shroff’s physique.

From scenes to dialogues, the tale is a typical Karan Johar film that is quite predictable. A lot of drama and action remains out of the classroom, with the main focus given to sports, dance and definitely romance!

Rightly pointed by another viewer in the hall, it’s underwhelming to see that it’s 2019 and only men are in the final race for ‘Dignity Student of the Year’ cup. Apart from Shreya’s focus on her passion, and the two women coaches in the two teams, no woman characters get their share of the limelight. Both Shreya and Mia, in the larger scheme of things, are reduced to cheering for the man they love. While Manav throughout the film worried about Rohan being the hero, and not his sidekick, the makers ended up making women the sidekicks of the story.

The acting is laughable, I mean, none of these pretty faces can actually act. Tiger Shroff keep on changing his limited two shades of emotion. Debutante Ananya Panday and Tara Sutariya look confident but both lack the charm. Can't blame the actors, it's probably just the absolutely rubbish script. At the end, SOTY 2 is just a silly, formulaic film with stock characters who are just pretty to ogle. It's a bit crude, a lot illogical and you might have to be in a certain state of mind to enjoy a film this silly.

Student Of The Year 2 is an unbelievably shallow mix of Karan Johar's Student Of The Year and Mansoor Khan's Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, with shaky performances and forgettable songs in an ultra-glamorous setting. It looks like director Punit Malhotra was so overwhelmed by the staggering budget allotted to the film that he directed all his energies towards making everyone and everything look good, and completely forgot to focus on logic and continuity in the process.

Rating Score -> 2.5/5
Being an ardent fan, it did not meet my expectations. It was repetitive with no mem(e)rable dialogues. Unlike the first part, SOTY2 did not test the overall intelligence of a person. It was limited to merely dancing, kabaddi and track events. Pushing the envelope for the LGBTQ community in Indian cinema, Gul Panag is seen hitting on a female colleague. Adorned with funny one-liners by Tiger's Pishori friends and surprise appearances, SOTY2 was all in all a light-hearted rom-com mingled with retro mixes, making the film a one-time watch.

15. Mumbai Mirror -

Rating Score -> 2.5/5
When you’ve signed up for the second edition of the airheaded franchise that revolves around Karan Johar’s interpretation of campus customs and couture, your expectations are in check. This one culminates in a sports film, which could be slotted as Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar meets Riverdale meets Dehradun Fashion Week. There’s just something winning about a man with modest means, forcing his privileged adversary to eat dust - the tested formula SOTY2 leans on rather blatantly and excessively.
