Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (PRDP) Movie Review

Expectation is colossal and sky high when two lethal strike force comes back again in silver screen in Sooraj Bajratya as director and Salman Khan as actor. Yes, they are back and back after a long time. With such deadly line up of films in past in 'Maine Pyar Kiya', 'Hum Aapke Hain Kaun' and 'Hum Saath Saath Hain' will they strike back again at box office? Will they able to connect with today's audiences like they use to do in 90s? These are some of the big questions to be answered. Despite having such unmatchable and enviable track record, even we are little bit skeptical this time as from promos getting the feel that subject of the film could be little dated. However contrastingly there is lot of curiosity also to know what has made Sooraj ji to return to directorial helm after such a long time. Hence, with lots of anxiety and curiosity let's start the movie review of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo.

Story - It is a simple story of a King Vijay Singh (Salman Khan) who is getting ready for his coronation. He also is engaged to Princess Maithili (Sonam Kapoor). He has a younger brother in Ajay Singh (Neil Nitin Mukesh) and two step sisters who stays separately from Vijay. Ajay Singh makes a master plan to kill is elder brother Vijay with help of CEO Chirag Singh (Armaan Kohli). As Vijay goes missing because of the master plan hatched by Ajay, there arrives a lookalike in Prem Dilwala (Salman) who is noticed by Raj Dewan (Anupam Kher). Prem is then placed in the place of missing King Vijay by the Dewan. Maithili who is engaged to Vijay falls in love with Prem falsely thinking of him as King Vijay. So, what happens after that is rest of story. Will King Vijay Singh be able to make a comeback from his hideout. Will Ajay Singh be successful in his master plan of killing his brother. What about the two step sisters of Vijay. Will they return to their home, where they actually belong? What will happen to Maithili who is actually in love with Prem Dilwala who is in disguise of King Vijay. For all this one has to go and watch the movie in theater.

First half of the film is very good except few scenes where film dips a bit. There are lots of funny moments and loads of entertainment dose. The scenes between Prem (Salman) and Kanhaiya (Deepak Dobriyal) are hilarious. Plus the scenes where Prem and Dewan (Anupam Kher) meets and after that are really interesting. Coming to second half, it is slow at parts. 1-2 songs comes as speed breakers. Film could have been easily shorten by good 15-20 minutes. However good news is that there are also lots of plusses. Second half is full of emotion. There are few scenes where eyes will get moist. The scenes between Salman and Swara Bhaskar who play step sister of King Vijay are simply stand out. Yes, the Climax is the best part which make up for the small small drawbacks in the second half.

Songs: 'Prem Ratan Dhan Payo title track' is excellent in the film. It is a winner all the way. 'Aaj Unse Milna Hai' and 'Jalte Diye' are good. Rest are either situational or plain average.

Story is very noble and good at heart. But writing could have been better at places. Few scenes are kept for just convenience. Few scenes looked amateurish, childish and silly at today's times. Editing could have been tighter at places. But the good intent of filmmaker to gives us a nice message oriented film with entertainment and family bondings wins all over the small minuses.

Cinematography is excellent. Film looks lavish and grand in each frame Every penny spent is noticed in the big screen. Yes, scale of the film is huge and kudos to makers for that.

Sooraj Barjatya knows only goodness and sweetness. His writing of the story, his screenplay and his direction everything is all about that. It is highly unfair of him if his direction and storytelling in PRDP is compared with cult classic like Maine Pyar Kiya and Hum Aapke Hain Kaun. Yes, he does an outstanding job with his director hat and kudos to him for that. He delivers, what he promises of a colourful, vibrant and good film with values, ethics and Indian tradition. Sooraj Sir please do make more such films as such movies are not made anymore in Bollywood.

Performance: Salman Khan is extremely lovable as 'Prem Dilwale' character. The sweetness, the innocence he carries in each scene is simply magical. It can be stated in writings that he has simply mastered the role of Prem to the core. Yes, he plays double role and he does well as 'King Vijay Singh' also which is much varied and more intense from the role of Prem. Although Vijay part is much lesser in screen space in comparison to Prem. Overall 'Prem Dilwala' will be the toast of families this festive season for sure.

Coming to Sonam Kapoor she looks 'Princess Maithili' from word go. She is charming and gorgeous in each and every frame. And yes she delivers a great performance also in the role of Maithili. In few scenes her chemistry with Salman looks stunning. Yes, it is her best acting till date and is a landmark film of her career.

Anupam Kher as 'Raj Dewan' is first rated. He gives an honest performance and is at his usual best. His funny scenes with Prem are stand out in the film. Neil Nitin Mukesh (Prince Ajay) does a very good job as brother of King Vijay. He has negative shades in his characters and he succeeds in those parts as well. He looks convincing.

Swara Bhaskar plays step sister of King Vijay. Pleasantly she gets a good and strong role to enact and she delivers it with ease and comfort. This girl is definitely to stay in Bollywood for long time. Hope she gets few more substantial roles in future specially in big films. Armaan Kohli plays the villain 'Chirag Singh' in the film. His role is half baked. Definitely there is simply no room for villains in Rajshri films and that shows with Chirag character also. Villain looks weaker and character could have been made better and stronger as well. Armaan gives a first rated job with whatever he had in his plate. Deepak Dobriyal as 'Kanhaiyaa' is simply superb. He delivers a finest and lovable performance with being the side kick of Prem. He stood from frame to frame with Salman in each and every scene. He is outstanding and scene stealer.

Verdict - Prem Ratan Dhan Payo is a film about families, its values and all about love. So, there is no doubt that film will be watched by families and in numbers. There goes a saying in trade, "Never underestimate the power of family audiences". This festive season families will come in large numbers to watch PRDP in theaters. Plus there is added sweetness in Prem Dilwala. Also, film getting Holiday release will open big at box office in opening weekend. After that it is all about the family audiences which will be attracted to theaters. Yes, it has big legs to go and touch 300 crores and even overhaul it. Yes, PRDP is a slow drug which will catch the nation big time in coming days.

Rating - 3.5/5. Would have gone with 4 stars had film be shorten by 20 mins. Sooraj Sir if you are reading this, kindly cut those excess songs and few scenes. Finally, yes 'Prem Dilwala' wins you all over again! Innocent and lovable Salman Khan is simply lethal! Do go and watch it with your whole family in theaters this festive season!
