Best and Worst Bollywood Film of 2013. Guest Post.

Best of 2013

1) Bhaag Milkha Bhaag

*Farhan Akhtar and Sonam Kapoor. Directed by Rakeysh Mehra. Based on the life of Milkha Singh, an Indian athlete who was a national champion runner, Olympian and was given the title of "The Flying Sikh" by the Pakistani president. After Lagaan I think this was the movie which made me feel proud to be an Indian. Farhan Akhatar, Pavan Malhotra, Divya Dutta gave the best performance of this year and for sure this movie will win many awards. It also proved if content is good any movie can cross 100 cr at boxoffice without star power.

2) Raanjhanaa

*Dhanush and Sonam Kapoor. Directed by Anand L. Rai. A Simple love story about a hindu boy in love with a muslim girl with Varanas as backdrop. Dhanush gave a brilliant performance and special mention for his friend Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub (Murari) who was equally good in his small part, A R Rehman music was refreshing and went with the flow of the movie .

3) Special 26

*Akshay Kumar, Manoj Bajpai, Anupam Kher, Kajal Agarwal. Directed by Neeraj Pandey. After "A Wednesday" there was a huge expectation from Neeraj Pandey and he didn't disappoint us. Movie was set in 1987 India about fake CBI raid. Movie had a high dose of suspense and comedy.

4) Aashiqui 2

*Aditya Roy Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor. Directed by Mohit Suri. Movie was a love story between two singers and there rise and fall. The real backbone of this movie was its chartbuster music which took this movie to a new level. For the first time a movie with two new faces crossed 100 cr. Mithoon & Arijit Singh combination "tum hi ho" will go down as this year's best track and will sweep all musical awards

5) Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

*Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone. Directed by Ayan Mukerji. Movie was a coming of age drama with marriage as backdrop. Film did miracle at the box office and in one shot took Ranbir Kapoor in the big league. Best part of the movie was the chemistry between the the lead pair and chartbuster music.

6) Dhoom 3

*Aamir Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Katrina Kaif. Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya. This movie  was the third installment of the Dhoom series. Like the Dhoom series it was about bikes and high dose of action. Movie was expected to score big because of Dhoom franchise and it did with huge margin and broke all the previous records. With 500 cr gross expected, this movie will set a new benchmark. For sure Dhoom 3 just made us realise how much Hindi film market as grown over these years.

7) Chennai Express

*Shahrukh Khan, Deepika Padukone. Directed by Rohit Shetty. This movie was typical Bollywood masala entertainer with Rohit shetty touch. Movie was liked by masses and gave Shahrukh Khan the much needed blockbuster. Deepika padukone gave one of her best performance as a Tamil girl.

8) Krrish 3

*Hrithik Roshan, Vivek Oberoi, Priyanka Chopra, Kangna Ranaut. Directed by Rakesh Roshan. This movie was the third installment of its series. Movie was about the super hero Krrish who saves the world from Kaal with help of his father. Another family entertainer with high emotional content plus vfx this movie rocked the box office. It may not have matched the Hollywood level but did take Bollywood vfx to another level.

9) Jolly LLB

*Arshad Warsi, Boman Irani, Saurabh Shukla. Directed by Subhash Kapoor. This movie was loosely based on one high profile car accident that happened in India. Saurabh Shukla and Boman Irani performances were top-notch. Film did make profit at the box office without big name.

10) Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela

*Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone. Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet this movies was a color feast. Super cinematography, music and wonderful performance from the cast were the high point of the movie.

Special mention to movies like - Grand Masti, Kai Po Che, Mere Dad Ki Maruti, Go Goa gone, Shudh Desi Romance which were entertaining  but didnt feature in my list....

Worst of 2013

1) Himmatwala

*Ajay Devgan, Tamannah. Directed by Sajid Khan. This movie was the official remake of 1983 Himmatwala. Sajid Khan has the habit of over doing and in this movie everything was over the top. Movie was the first big release of 2013 and from very first day movie just went in downward direction. What went wrong - Everything.

2) Once Upon Ay Time in Mumbai Dobara

*Akshay Kumar, Imran Khan, Sonakshi Sinha. Directed by Milan Luthria. This movie was sequel to Once Upon A Time in Mumbai. Lot was expected from this movie because of star power and sequel value plus holiday release but it failed miserably at the box office. What went wrong - poor casting as Imran never looked like a don and a poor script.

3) Besharam

*Ranbir kapoor, Pallavi Sharda, Rishi kapoor, Neetu kapoor. Directed by Abhinav Kashyap. Both Ranbir and Abhinav previous movies were blockbuster, so much was expected from this too. Movie did open well because of Ranbir but from second day it went down because of bad word of mouth. What went Wrong - Poor script and too many average songs.

4) Gori Tere Pyaar Mein

*Imran Khan, Kareena Kapoor. Directed by Punit Malhotra. This movie hardly had anything new to offer, same love drama and misunderstandings. What went wrong - Bad release date, Bad casting and slow second half.

5) Bombay Talkies

Four different short stories directed by Zoya Akhtar ("Sheila Ki Jawaani"), Dibakar Banerjee ("star"), Karan Johar ("Ajeeb Dastaan Hai Yeh"), Anurag Kashyap ("Murabba") was presented in one movie. This movie was a tribute to 100 years of hindi cinema. None of the story left an impression on Indian audience and the movie sank without a trace. What went wrong - our top directors were busy showing there talent rather than making a genuine tribute for Hindi cinema.

6) Satya 2

*Puneet Singh Ratn. Directed by Ram Gopal Varma. It was a remake of 1998 satya. All the things shown were seen before in Ramu movies and it hardly had anything new to offer. What  went wrong - Ram Gopal Varma !!
