Toilet: Ek Prem Katha Movie Review.

Toilet: Ek Prem Katha starring Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pedenkar is the big release of the day. Film is based on true events and is carrying a social message that is relevant to Swach Bharat Mission. Akshay Kumar is playing the lead role in the film and he is currently in full form after delivering back to back Hits. Whether, TEPK will join that elite list of Hits? Let's do the movie review of Toilet: Ek Prem Katha.

Story - Toilet: Ek Prem Katha traces the love story between Keshav (Akshay Kumar) and Jaya (Bhumi Pednekar), set in two villages near Mathura. Keshav is 'jugadbaaz', whereas Jaya is extremely opposite. Jaya is progressive and topper in studies. After a lot of personality clash, love finally happens between them and they get married. However, there is no toilet facility in Keshav's house. When Jaya found this, all hell broke lose. She leaves Keshav house and returns to her home. Whether Jaya will ever return to her husband home? Or, they will simply get separate? Or, will Keshav built a toilet in their home? For this all, one have to watch the film in theaters.

TEPK is a satirical take on a battle against the age old tradition of open defecation in the country. From the panchayat to the sanitation department, from the role of the government to the superstitions of the villagers, from scams to the ethos, from first love to a matured romance, TEPK is Keshav's journey where a common man stands up for a cause and eventually changes the mindsets.

In today's time, the social issue shown in the film is relevant in some parts of India but not all. Metros and big cities don't have this issue in general. In fact in villages also there is toilet facility in every household nowadays. True, there are some places in India where such issue is still relevant and kudos to makers that they have choose such project to enlighten the society. However, will the Pan India audience connect with TEPK. We have a doubt.

Coming to film first half, it is fantastic. The love story shown between Akshay and Bhumi is thoroughly enjoyable. There are lots of funny moments, comedy, emotional scenes. Overall, film is terrific till interval.

Film take serious turn after interval. Film gets stretched on the issue of open defecation. Narration is weak and rides on water thin plot after interval. However, there are still fun filled moments and emotional scene embedded in between. Good part is film picks up again in climax and ends on a high note.

Direction of Shree Narayan Singh is good. Screenplay is good in first half, but average in second half. Editing could have been better specially in second half of the film. Also, 2nd half could have been shortened by 10-15 minutes. Music is strictly average and lacks 1 or 2 chartbuster songs.

Coming to performances, both Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar are simply terrific in their respective roles. Both are heart and soul of the film and carries the film fully on their shoulders. Chemistry between Akshay and Bhumi looks magical and real. Akshay has delivered one of his best till date with TEPK. This is definitely Bhumi's best till date. This girl will go places for sure and definitely here to stay. Divyendu Sharma as Keshav's friend is outstanding in the film. He is simply hilarious in many scenes. Anupam Kher, Sudhir Pandey, Rajesh Sharma and rest all delivers honest performance in the film.

Verdict: TEPK is a fun filled clean family entertainer, which is a rarity nowadays. One can watch it with whole family. First half is very good, whereas second half is decent only. Overall definitely watchable.

Ratings: 3/5. Recommended for the pure intention and striking chemistry between Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar.

  9. This movie is a winner all the way! Again an outstanding selection from the National Award Winner! I am an SRK fan, but we must always appreciate quality content films. This film is high on content, performances, making, and finally entertainment! If you say that you doubt the film connecting pan-India, then think again, you are underestimating the subject discussed here. The director has put his best forward to depicting it without any subtlety and disgust. Kudos for that. The emotional scenes stand out. As a city bred person, we all have roots in the core villages of our country where still open defecation is such a big problem. Hence I congratulate the makers for daring such a film and making it into an "Aamir Khan perfectionist" class of a film. Hope the film gets tax free status and collect more than 100 cr.
