Bajirao Mastani Hit or Flop. How about the Economics.

Bajirao Mastani is riding on very high budget and there is no second thought on that. But film well promotion and meticulous planning is ensuring that film will be safe proposition in coming days. This is extremely good news for both makers and distributors.

Bajirao Mastani is economics is very simple. Film landing cost (Budget inclusive of P&A) is whopping 125-130 crores. However makers have recovered a significant approx 50 crores from sale of Satellite and Music rights. That means film needs around huge 80 crores to be recovered from theatrical business Anything above that will be profits.

As per present film trending, Bajirao Mastani is set to recover most of the amount from India theatricals itself. Film is looking to collect around 75-80 crores distributor share from India theatrical business itself. Plus, film is doing extremely well in Overseas and big returns are coming from there also. Which is added bonus now.

Bajirao Mastani will be easily plus film when film crosses 140 crore nett mark. If film crosses 150-160 crore nett it will be a Clean Trade Hit with decent to good profits for all. Hope it answers all your queries regarding whether film will be a HIT of FLOP.

The simple logic of verdict is a film need to collect the distributer share of the budget.

Like if a movie landing cost is 130 then it shouod collect distributer share of 130 crores worldwide...

This is applicable for all movie thus Dilwale already earned a distributor share of approx 110 till 2nd weekend and hence already recovered all its investment.

Film is a CLEAN HIT....though for SUPER HIT it need to earn 170 crores in india...

  2. Dear Ankur, Aapne yeh nahi bataya ke Dilwale ke Domestic Distribution Writes kitne Crores mein sale kiye gaye hai. Aur yeh bhi nahi bataya ke Distributor Share kitna Hona chahiye aur abhi tak film ne kitna kamaya.

In BM Mastani Case also you didn't mention the cost of distribution writes but you only mention "Film is looking to collect aroung 75-80 Crores distributor share". Yeh Kaise Pata Chalega ke film ke distribution writes kitne mein sale hue the.

    Please Clarify.

  3. Dear Ankur,

Wish you and entire addatoday team a very happy, prosperous and successful new year 2016. I have always believed in the reports published on your website and this time also you people have done a remarkable job. Congratulation to your entire team for that.

Now, coming towwards the economic analysis of the performance of BM and Dilwale, I am putting my points as below:

    1. Bajirao Mastani: As per your website the budget of BM is approx 125-130crs. Till date BM has done a business of 140crs in india itself. You have predicted a lifetime business of 160crs for BM and if it does that then looking at the distributor share BM can be tagged as a clean hit in india. However, the picture is not the same if the worldwide collections are considered as BM is lagging behind Dilwale big time in this apsect. However as you said the verdict is decided by india business so that I feel BM will get a clean hit status.

    2. Dilwale: As per your website the budget of BM is approx 95-100crs.(Article: Box office prediction of Dilwale Hit or Flop) Till date Dilwale has done a business of 135crs in india itself. You have predicted a lifetime business of 150crs and if it does that then looking at the distributor share it can be tagged as a clean hit in india. However, if the worldwide collections are considered then Dilwale has made its deep impact there. However as you said the verdict is decided by india business so that I feel Dilwale should get a clean hit status.

My take: If we consider the different odds faced by both the films the screen size got neutralized in 2nd week as BM maintained approx same number of screens whereas Dilwale was reduced to almost half. Yes It is the fact that BM has been liked by the audience in a much better mnanner but I dont agree with the term that Dilwale has been completely disappointed. I feel there was a lot of expectations carrying on Dilwale due to SRk-Rohit, SRK-Kajol, Varun dhawan etc factors and I also admit it fell short of those expectations but it has been rejected by the audience. If rejected then it would not have been able to make approx 135crs in two weeks. Yes, it has been an under performer as per the standards set by SRK and team himself but it has certainly not been flop or rejected as claimed by a certain section of haters. If a movie of 95-100crs of budget doing a business of approx 150crs is said as rejected then what would you say about BM where the budget is 125-130crs and collections are 160crs. So, In my opinion both BM and Dilwale has performed on the similar lines with BM a bit better. Yes, considering the SRK factor Dilwale has not performed to its full potential but it is certainly not a flop. I repeat if you tag Dilwale as flop or rejected then BM will also be considered as a flop by looking at its economics. So, I feel the haters might have learned a bit of profit loss in mathematics. Apply that and you will know the fact. Thank you.
