With official first look released of both the films Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani it is confirmed that both films are releasing on 18th December and clashing big time at box office. There is no case of backing out now. It is makers and distributors headache now, but other way it is delight for both exhibitors and audiences as they have two choices. Both parties are now trying to book screens as much as possible. Both parties are set to get ample screen count in multiplexes, whereas single screens will be a big tussle between them. It is too early to predict but since Dilwale boast of bigger star quotient it has every chance of getting bigger release on 18th December. However Bajirao Mastani also has good star quotient and and should have good amount of screening across India.
As far as impact on box office is concerned it will have some. But thankfully, Holidays (Christmas & New Year) falls on second week onwards and by then word of mouth of the films will be out. Since, film opens on working Friday, opening should have not any issue as hardly film runs on 100% occupancy on day 1 specially in working day. Affect will start on 1st Saturday and 1st Sunday when big audiences throng to theaters. From 1st Monday again word of mouth will take on.
Supposedly we take for example Dilwale gets 3000 screens and Bajirao Mastani gets 2000 screens. Then Dilwale has potential of collecting around 90 crore nett collection in opening weekend with 100% occupancy. However if film was released solo it would have got 110-120 crore nett in 3 days with 100% occupancy. Plus, in solo release audiences will have only choice of watching that film. However in multiple release this is not the case.
As per trade there will be big impact on box office only when both films are liked by audiences, otherwise impact will not that be significant. Suppose both films get decent to good feedback from viewers than Dilwale might have an affect of around 25-30 crores and Bajirao Mastani may have 10-20 crores in lifetime business. However if any of the film gets negative or mixed response from audiences then it will affected badly. For example: Dilwale if released solo would have collected 200 crores at box office despite mixed reviews. However with clash from BM if it gets mixed report then it might struggle to get past that. Similarly if BM released solo it would have collected around 125 crore nett despite mixed report. But now after the clash it might struggle to go past 100 crore mark.
Anyways it another one and half month time to the big release date. Get set ready for some fireworks at box office by then. Definitely this year will end with a Bang!
