May 2015 can be relatively termed a better month for Bollywood as few films have shined at box office. Although May also saw one of the biggest Flops of all time in Bombay Velvet. Films like Tanu Weds Manu Returns and Piku went onto to become Big Hits, whereas Gabbar is Back also joined them as plus film.
Just considering the theatrical revenue part in India. TWMR is set to earn a bare minimum of 60-65 crore distributor share from India itself. That means a profit of 30-35 crore. If Overseas and Satellite rights are considered then profit may go as high as 50+ crore which is just fantastic for a film with mid-budget range.
Coming to Piku which is set to earn distributor share of 38-39 crores from India. Again film not only recover all its investment from India theatrical itself, but also has made decent profit. Plus, if Overseas and Satellite rights are considered then profits are further added up. Overall film has done excellent business till date.
Gabbar is Back is more or less a break even prospect when just India theatrical is concerned. Film has recovered around 44-45 crores in distributor share which is the exact price of its theatrical rights. If Overseas and Satellite rights are considered then makers may make some kind of profits. Overall distributors are safe, but will not make any kind of significant profit.
Among all the positives above, however biggest setback came in hand of Bombay Velvet. Film is a absolute disaster from word go. Film is bound to make of a combined loss of over 70 crores when India theatrical, Overseas theatrical, Satellite rights everything is considered for the makers. Film will go down in history of Bollywood as one of the biggest Flops of all time. It is definitely the biggest in terms of money film has lost.
2015 has been a sad year so far with only few selected have crossed the danger zone. Hence, May 2015 still can be considered a better month despite a Bombay Velvet. Finally we have a film in TWMR which has entered the coveted 100 crore club in May.
