Best Release Dates for Bigger Bollywood Films in 2014-2015. A Special Report.

As box office numbers are nowadays more important than awards, as 100 and 200 crore club are getting filled, makers of Bollywood films want best released dates for their respective films. Trend is common in last few years, but there was some sanity among all. Earlier makers used to lock a Eid or Diwali or Christmas release dates and if that slot is occupied by some big banners, then they look for alternative preferable non-holiday release. But with Bollywood Box Office growing and 100 crores film are coming in, now its a serious business for all. They are looking at new release dates like Independence Day, Republic Day, May Day or a 2nd October release. Even a single day Holiday can change a film business by 10-20 crores.

What is getting murkier is that now big films are getting ready to clash with each other on Holiday release, rather than coming solo on a Non-Holiday weekend. So, what's are major aftershock of these latest happenings?

  • First Big Films that are clashing on Holiday Release are eating into each other business from Day One. If not both at least one film business is affected hugely as it gets lesser screens than the other. Secondly in Holiday period with Plethora of releases, they hardly get open second week or a third week, which is absolutely possible in case of Normal Release.
  • Secondly Film Industry is bleeding badly as there is hardly any big banner release in dry period (non-festive) say in case of 2014 (February-May). So, it has to depend on smaller films to do well for their day to day earnings.
  • Lastly audiences, as they have little choice in dry period to watch films as majority of big banners are scheduled for Festive or Holiday release. That means they is scarcity of big films on dry period, whereas in contrast they have to choose among big films to watch few in Festive or Holiday as plethora of releases and they can't spend all their hard earned money on all films every week.

Situation is not going to change this year or in 2015 also as most biggies have locked big release dates. So, let's check what effect is going to have in near future.

When asked few exhibitors, which are the stars they always looked to have a release. From samples, they always looks for a release from (in alphabetical order):

  • A List Stars: Aamir Khan, Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan.
  • B List Stars: If A List Stars movie not available for release then Ranbir Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, Saif Ali Khan, Shahid Kapoor  are next most preferable choices.
  • Sometimes they also give weightage to releases from leading ladies like Deepika Padukone, Kareena Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Priyanka Chopra if buzz is good.

Here are month wise look up of how films are released or going to release in 2014-2015.

Big Dry Spells

Hope as Bollywood is progressing more planning will be done for release dates. Its always good when Big Films are separated by sufficient time space from each other. That says good for them, for exhibitors and finally good for audiences. Hope dry spells as shown above disappears in coming years and moviegoers have choices every month of the year.
