All Time Blockbuster Variance Across Box Office Trade. Special Report.

As soon as Chennai Express crossed 200 crore nett mark at Indian Box Office many trade analyst and sites have declared it as All Time Blockbuster. With that we received lots of queries in our mails, comment section and micro blogging sites whether Chennai Express is a Blockbuster or All Time Blockbuster. So, we tried to find proper solution to it.

What is All Time Blockbuster? A successful film in theaters which earns profit for Makers and Distributors is classified as Hit, Super Hit and Blockbuster. Obviously Blockbuster is the highest order of Hit and it is a dream of every makers to attain that status for their respective films.

However there are some films across Decades/Years which left its mark at Box Office with its superb running and sets benchmarks which remain difficult to be broken in years to come. Plus, they march ahead from the films released on same time period and does unimaginable business. These films are termed All Time Blockbuster (ATBB), which is also a kind of sub-category of Blockbuster.

Now question comes as which are the films that are ATBB at Indian Box Office History. Earlier there was a Unified Standard System for Hit Verdict till Dabangg (2010) and everyone in trade gave the same verdict. But after Dabangg, independent trade analyst and sites started declaring on their own ATBB verdicts and now there is a variance of ATBBs in recent years.

ATBB till Dabangg (2010) - Unified Box Office Verdict -

1. Kismet (1943)
2. Rattan (1944)
3. Mother India (1957)
4. Mughal-E-Azam (1960)
5. Sholay (1975)
6. Jai Santoshi Maa (1975)
7. Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985)
8. Maine Pyar Kiya (1989)
9. Aankhen (1993)
10. Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994)
11. Diwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995)
12. Raja Hindustani (1996)
13. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998)
14. Gadar (2001)
15. Ghajini (2008)
16. 3 Idiots (2009)
17. Dabangg (2010)

Till Dabangg verdict is similar in all trade sources. But post Dabangg there is a big variance in ATBB verdict. More to emphasize on that matter we will consider another popular trade analyst and its trade verdict. We usually don't take other sites or Trade Analyst names in our site for various reasons. But since, we have to look how verdict is given by other trade analyst, we have considered popular Trade Analyst Mr. Taran Adarsh and his site Bollywood Hungama as one of the reference in this post.

Mr. Taran Adarsh has declared post Dabangg (2010) the following films as ATBB respectively. These films are Ready (2011), Bodyguard (2011), Ek Tha Tiger (2012), Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013) and Chennai Express (2013).

Screenshots of Mr. Taran Adarsh verdict are provided below and details can be found in Bollywood Hungama Trade Section.

Right now since, a moviegoers take business update from more than one site. They are confused which verdict is to follow. Simple, if you follow Mr. Taran Adarsh (Just an example, there are lots of sites now and you can follow whichever you believe), then as per him below is the Updated ATBBs.

ATBB till Present (Including ATBB of Mr. Taran Adarsh. Just for Sample) -

1. Kismet (1943)
2. Rattan (1944)
3. Mother India (1957)
4. Mughal-E-Azam (1960)
5. Sholay (1975)
6. Jai Santoshi Maa (1975)
7. Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985)
8. Maine Pyar Kiya (1989)
9. Aankhen (1993)
10. Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994)
11. Diwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995)
12. Raja Hindustani (1996)
13. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998)
14. Gadar (2001)
15. Ghajini (2008)
16. 3 Idiots (2009)
17. Dabangg (2010)
18. Ready (2011)
19. Bodyguard (2011)
20. Ek Tha Tiger (2012)
21. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013)
22. Chennai Express (2013)

No doubt Mr. Taran Adarsh is one of the most reputed trade analyst and whatever he mentions have weightage. The criteria that he has set for ATBB is different from us and hence, the variance, nothing more than that.

From the above list of Mr. Taran Adarsh, we (Addatoday) gave Ready and Bodyguard as outright Blockbuster. Because of this we got many backlash from fans, specially Salman Khan fans as above mentioned films featured Salman. Similar thing happened when Ek Tha Tiger was also declared Blockbuster by us and hullabaloo was bigger this time. Same scenario happened with Chennai Express now as we have not yet declare it as ATBB (Verdict is awaited). But this time hullabaloo was more from Shah Rukh Khan fans as he featured in CE. Although, hullabaloo was little less when we declared YJHD as Blockbuster.

Coming to both ETT and CE. Yes, in Box Office Prediction we have given ATBB verdict for Ek Tha Tiger as 180+ crore nett and for Chennai Express as 200+ crore nett. And yes, both film has done much more business than these predicted verdict. But one has to take account that predictions are just estimations and approximations. Many thing changes post release (For e.g., Post Release Size, Trending, ROI, Budget). Hence, actual verdict can't be same as predicted. Then what is the difference between predictions and actual analysis. We are not against Salman or SRK, but what is true we have to deliver it. Plus, whatever verdict we give for a particular film, that is our personal and one can choose verdict of other site or trade analyst. No issue with that. Finally we like to point that in future also many scenarios will come when a verdict of particular film will be different. Hence, be consistent with your judgement.

As for us, we always follow the unified standard system of ATBB. And yes, if in coming days, Chennai Express attain the All Time Blockbuster status, we will proudly update that. As for the moment with CE collecting 217+ crore nett, it is a Blockbuster in our records and which is by no means a small stature.
