Top Bollywood Grossers from 2008 to 2013 with Inflation Adjusted Analysis.

With Chennai Express becoming a Monstrous Hit at Box Office in 2013, we have considered why not to compare CE with last few Major Hits Movies in recent years and where it stands in Hit List. We have considered recent films from 2008 and onwards as Ghajini started the trend of 100 crore club and was a proper ATBB. Before that Gadar was ATBB but it was released long back in 2001 and keep that discussion for some later time.

There are basically two reasons to compare Chennai Express with last few years major hits. First, where it stands among the recent mega hits of course. Second, what verdict Chennai Express is justified. Suppose if we want to compare Chennai Express which is released in 2013 to Ghajini which was released in 2008. How to compare that then?

There is a term called Inflation. Inflation in general represents the price rise over a period of time. If we have to define Inflation in simple Bollywood term, then let's take an example. For example, Ghajini which had earned approx 115 crore nett in 2008, how much it would have earned in today's time that is 2013. It can be easily evaluated by calculating with Inflation Rate of India (General Price Rise of India) from 2009 till 2013. Once, Ghajni Inflation Adjusted Nett Gross is calculated for 2013, then it can be easily compared to Chennai Express 2013 Nett Gross or any other films which is inflation adjusted to 2013.

Average Inflation of India from 2009-2013 (Source)

Inflation in 2009 - 10.83%
Inflation in 2010 - 12.11%
Inflation in 2011 - 8.87%
Inflation in 2012 - 9.3%
Inflation in 2013 - 11.18%

Below is the table where Inflation Adjusted Nett Gross is calculated for Top 3 Grossers from 2008 to 2013. All in INR and in Crores.

From going through Table 1 and Table 2. We have made few important points.

1. 3 Idiots Inflation Adjusted Nett Gross for 2013 will be around 300.35 crore nett. That means 3 Idiots leads the table of top grossers from 2008 to 2013 easily by a big margin for Inflation Adjustment Case Scenario. 3 Idiots is definitely one of the biggest All Time Blockbuster ever in Bollywood.
2. Other than 3 Idiots, two movies which are clear ATBB is Ghajini and Dabangg. Inflation Adjusted Nett Gross of Ghajini for 2013 is 188.55 crore nett. Same for Dabangg for 2013 will be 191.83 crore nett.
3. Both Chennai Express (2013) and Ek Tha Tiger (2012) which have crossed Inflation Adjusted Nett Gross of Ghajini and Dabangg, would have easily attained ATBB if those two films were reference comparative tools. But from 2012 starting ATBB rules were much strict. Also, ROI of Chennai Express and ETT is less compared to a Ghajini or Dabangg as former films budget is on higher side. Because of these main factors ETT and Chennai Express are Blockbuster as per trade.
4. Last year there was a huge hullabaloo when we gave ETT as Blockbuster. Reason, many big and famous trade pundits gave ETT as ATBB, even they gave Bodyguard which was released in 2011 as ATBB. That's the same reason why they are giving Chennai Express as ATBB now.
5. As per us, Chennai Express is Blockbuster as for the same reason for ETT last year. We follow Box Office Trade and have to have unified standard for all films. Addatoday would have loved to give films like Ek Tha Tiger and Chennai Express ATBB verdict, but that will be false appraisal of those mentioned films. Also, ATBB is a privileged class for which film has to do unimaginable business which will be landmark in coming years. Addatoday values that and most definitely respect films which have achieved ATBB status. It is a great pride for films like Chennai Express, ETT or Bodyguard to be compared in the same wavelength of ATBB. That is a big prize in itself. Hope all Movie Fans fans will respect that also.
6. When Adjusted Nett Gross of ETT and Chennai Express is considered collections are nearly same for both films. Interesting both films footfall is also nearly same. Amazing.

Lastly we are soon going to prepare a Chart of Greatest All Time Blockbuster which will feature films like Sholay, HAHK, Gadar, 3 Idiots and many more popular ATBBs and will check how they fare when Inflation Adjustment is done till 2013.
