When 3 Idiots become the first film in Bollywood to collect 200 crore nett in 2009-2010, then everybody were stunned as then collecting a 100 crore nett was a huge landmark. After that many films come and gone who entered 100 crore club but failed to touch the coveted 200 crore nett mark. Eventually Chennai Express was released this year in Eid and it crossed 200 crore nett and even passed away 3 Idiots elusive landmark and still collecting.
So, what's are the consequences of Chennai Express now. Although Chennai Express is a huge hit and literally broke all records at box office in one go. Somewhere down the heart of each moviegoers and trade analysts was knowing that a good film with proper star cast and a proper release time will definitely cross 200 crore nett mark. Now that CE has crossed 200 crore, it has raised the benchmark for bollywood upcoming movies. A simply collecting a 100 will not be enough now. We still think that whatever is achieved by CE is just out of this world collection, but still many in trade believe that better is yet to come for the year.
2013 started slowly with only one film able to cross 100 crore in Race 2. But with Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani going onto become a monster hit collecting around 186 crore nett in its lifetime, everyone was just waiting for the film that will zoom past 200 now. With CE already achieving the target now, who knows another 200 crore nett may be round the corner.
What prerequisite essentials are needed for a film now to zoom past 200 now. First definitely a big star cast. Second the content obviously, otherwise opening will be good but after that it will fall. May be a good release date with 10-15 days free run.
So, which are the movies now that will challenge Chennai Express in 2013. First and most preferred two films that comes to mind is Krrish 3 and Dhoom 3. Both films are big franchise. Secondly both are having huge pre-release buzz and both are releasing in Holidays period. Apart from these two films others are unlikely to challenge CE box office numbers. Domestically few may argue that films like Besharam and Boss may have an outside chance, but realistically those two are right now out of equations. As for next year, yes there are many biggies to release, but who knows by then a new benchmark of say 250 crore nett may be on cards or even more.
Do let us know your thoughts. Do you think Chennai Express will remain as the biggest grosser of 2013 or a Krrish or a Dhoom will have other ideas?
